Candidate for the position of Chairperson

EMMA JOHNSON

Hey Girls!!

First of all, thank you for an amazing season and I am devstated it had to end the way it did.

Now, thank you for taking the time to look at my manifesto.

My name is Emma Johnson. I am currently on 5’s and last year I played for the Development Team. At University, I study Sport Development with Coaching and I aspire to be a secondary school PE Teacher. If I summed myself up in 3 words, it would be inclusive, committed and ambitious. I have a huge drive to help others and do good – whilst striving to achieve my personal best. I am an excellent communicator who can work with a variety of personalities which has given me the confidence to ambitiously network. I pride myself on being a team player due to my ability to motivate others, my ability to listen and my high level of empathy – these values make me approachable and easy to talk to whenever you may need me. My organisation skills help me to adapt in challenging situations and meet high pressure deadlines. I will ensure all needs are met and do my best to make sure all girls get the best possible Hallam Netball experience. My hunger for success and competitiveness has resulted in me applying for the role of Hallam Netball’s Chairperson.

Hallam Netball has a precious place in my heart. I have adored my first 2 years playing netball in this Club, all my University best friends are from netball and it was without a doubt my best university decision to join the netball team! Netball is the best club in Team Hallam (am I right Girls?!) and I am so passionate about maintaining this! If I was nominated, I would live and breathe the role of Chair - I would do everything I can to ensure the best for the Club and to see it improve even further. The potential SHU Netball Club has is endless!!

My Roles

  • Chairperson of SDC in the Community Society 2019/20
  • Match Day Secretary for Hallam Netball Committee 2019/20
  • Hallam 5’s 2019/20
  • Development Squad 2018/19 – Vice Captain
  • Student Sport Activator 2019/20 (Social Netball)
  • Schools Sports Coach since 2017
  • Head coach of Year 6 netball team since 2018
  • Goalball UK Activator 2019/20, Goal Judge and Table Official
  • SHU Open Day tour guide since 2018
  • SHU Course Representative since 2018
  • Platinum Young Ambassador (NEDSSP, 2015-17)
  • Level 1 Coaching Qualifications: Netball, Football, Fencing
  • Level 2 Coaching Qualification in Multi Skills / working towards L2 Netball

My Experience

  • Chaired funding bid for SDC in the Community via Street Games. This will be useful when writing a development fund request
  • As Chair of SDCC, I organised: fortnightly meetings; development meetings with the Student Union; the AGM; and meetings with local partners e.g. the Street Games cluster meeting 2019-2020.
  • Secured partnerships with: Sheffield College, Barnsley College, Goalball UK, Street Games, SHU Coach Academy, and Move More.
  • Study Sport Development with Coaching
    • My degree has direct links with being a good Chairperson. I have gained relevant knowledge from the following modules: Strategic Planning, Marketing, Sport and Society, Professional Skills in Sport, Sport Event Management
  • Organiser of Qualitas SSP district Netball Tournament (2018 & 2019) – This will be useful for organising pre-season/trails

If elected, I would aim to:

- Objective 1: Increase funding

1) Secure sponsorship by connecting more: Tweet a minimum every 2 days; give regular shout-outs to any collaborators and using their logo where possible; invest in club banners, and networking with Sheffield-based businesses.

2) Sign club up to Easyfundraising… Every time a club member or supporter buys something from one of over 3,000 online shops (Amazon, John Lewis, Sainsbury’s, etc.), Hallam Netball will get a cut of the total cost.

3) Run an annual Buddy Night – invite friends / family / siblings for a night of fun netball (everyone brings a £2 fee)

4) Charity events such as running a Quiz Night to raise money for our club

5) (If the Club agrees), I have the idea to purchase personalised netball dresses with our names on the back, but please throw out any ideas how this extra funding could be better spent!

- Objective 2: Increase social activity

  1. Each team will have 3 sober socials per year. I will help with ideas and making sure these happen! I will push for sober socials because I made close netball friends in the Development Squad through my first sober social at Nandos!
  2. Members will be encouraged to come to Nation Wednesdays and other social events throughout the year. I will work alongside social secs to ask what everyone would like to see on our social calendar! I aim to cater for EVERYONE.

- Objective 3: Continue from the amazing work of last year’s committee

I will work towards maintaining and spending more time on the brilliant systems set up this year:

  1. Weekly training: BUCS Squads; Development Squads; S&C Sessions; Friday Fitness Sessions; TRIBE
  2. Intramural League
  3. Social media platforms
  4. The coaching team
  5. Try outs for next season 2020/21
  6. Communication Systems – 3 Facebook pages (Social, Club, Fitness). WhatsApp groups for Committee & Team Hallam, Captains, individual committee members with Chair & Vice Chair
  7. Good and regular relations between our Matchday Sec and local umpires
  8. Secure good prices for both Canterbury and SHM kits. Also research new products!
  9. I WILL MAKE TOUR HAPPEN, EVEN IF I HAVE TO FLY US THERE MYSELF!!

-Objective 5: Lessen the divide between Development and BUCS Teams

1) With 1-5’s and 6&7’s having different training times, it’s really hard to get to know one another well. I will pay monthly visits (without fail!!) to Development training to see how the teams are getting on and if they require anything from our committee

2) I will continue to enter 2 additional teams into the local South Yorkshire league so lots of Netball Mums will be allocated!!

2) I will begin the recruitment of a Head Coach and Assistant Coach for our Development Teams from the get-go. I will do this by liaising with our coaching team, and by advertising on Hallam Netball’s social media platforms.

-Objective 6: Improve social netball

As a Student Sport Activator in 2019/20, I gained the experience of coaching the University’s social netball teams on a weekly basis. From this, I learnt this program needs to be developed further. The main problem is the lack of participants. Therefore, I aim to increase participation rates by 30%. I will achieve this by working closely with the UNO and David Knapton (Team Hallam Sport Participation Development Coordinator) and i plan to continue coaching this team next year myself.

-Objective 7: New feedback system (Traffic Light System)

1) We are all in this together and your opinions matter! If you have an idea, I want to hear it and the more ideas thrown at me the better!

2) I will introduce a simple feedback system for each aspect of our club – for example quality of training or how good the Umpires we chose are… Green = Happy with this part of the club. Amber = room for improvement. Red = below average and you will be asked if you have ideas on how to improve this area of our club!

-Objective 8: A huge emphasis will be on Varsity 2021

  • In response to the cancellation of Varsity 2020, I will work tirelessly to ensure Varsity 2021 is the best Varsity yet!

-Objective 9: Introduce a club-wide Player of the Month

This will motivate everyone to always be on their A game. Prizes for Hallam Netball's Player of the Month to be decided - but i will ensure they are worthwhile!! POM's will be announced on our social medias.

- Objective 10: Improve relations between Hallam Netball and the local community:

  1. Each team will complete at least 2 good deeds throughout the year. This could be raising money for our chosen charity (bag packing; car washing; bake sales; etc.), helping out the elderly, volunteering at a local animal sanctuary, coaching a netball session at a local Youth group / SEND school – the list is endless!!
  2. Exhibition Tournament: A one-off special event where Hallam Netball takes on a standout opponent – these may be club legends from down the years; a local team that has a higher profile than ours (e.g. Leeds Rhinos Netball); or a touring all-star netball team!

Extra points…

  1. I will invite guest coaches from different clubs in Team Hallam as regular as possible
  2. I will find the best training times possible by contacting Team Hallam and SIV as soon as I possibly can
  3. My response time to you girls will be less than 12 hours (but ASAP!!)
  4. I will improve our page on Team Hallam's website (e.g. by adding more pictures) to increase traffic to Hallam Netball Club.
  5. I will carry on enforcing the same alcohol policy. This will be declared at the start of the season.
  6. I will put a huge emphasis on going to allocated S&C sessions as a team to build rapport amongst team members. This happened less than it should’ve this year and it’s important to train with teammates.
  7. I will motvate every team to secure as many wins as possible by continuing Team of the Month

Thank you for reading my manifesto and feel free to get in contact with me to ask any questions about my ideas. I want to carry on the amazing work that this year’s committee has worked hard to achieve – and take everything to the next level! Please see my video on our Facebook Page for a more detailed Manifesto.

Here’s to more incredible netball, memories and success stories in 2020/21! Xxx
